COUNTRIES THAT GRANT scholarships

Every year, countries around the world invest in the future by offering scholarships to talented athletes and students. These opportunities are more than just financial aid; they represent the beginning of a journey where your talent will reach its maximum potential. They represent a gateaway to world-class education.

International Scholarship on sports

To apply for a scholarship, you need, apart from the international titles and achievements you have won throughout your professional sport journey, you recognize the countries that glorify sports more and could grant you even more benefits for playing them.

In this section, the countries that grant benefits for those students who practice sports will be mentioned:

  • United States: The U.S college sport system is considered to be one of the strongest in the world. Over 2,000 universities offer athletic teams where the practice of sports is possible, and they are overseen by a large number of organizations such as the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, USCAA, and NCCAA. Each university has its own sports lineup alongside students’ eligibility and scholarship applications.

Every year, thousands of students apply for a scholarship and can study and still practice high-level professional sports. This eligibility opens doors for students who can reach the NBA, NFL, and other high sports. But, to be considered eligible to receive the immense sport benefits the U.S promises, you must first know the U.S sport system alongside with the scholarships available for the university of your preference.

  • Canada: Canada has fewer universities and sports teams compared to the USA and other countries. In statistics, 1 out of 7 universities offer these types of programs. Their sports scholarships mostly only cover tuition, leaving housing or travel behind. So, my recommendation if you are an elite athlete, the U.S sports system offers more comprehensive financial aid.

However, studying in Canada still offers a rich cultural experience, and you will have a high probability of entering the professional team afterward, though with less exposure than in the U.S.

  • United Kingdom: Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) has a solid sports tradition and several universities grant awards and international recognition for athletic scholarships. Most of these range from 500 euros to 5,000 euros a year, and with exclusive and top elite athletes receive 13,500 euros. Scholarships can include coaching, gym access, and exam flexibility. However, few international athlete gets spots at university teams; most spots are reserved for local or national athletes.

Other major countries:

  • Europe (Spain, Italy, France, Germany, etc): Many universities offer sports programs and sometimes scholarships, but the competition or performance gets less visibility compared to other countries such as Great Britain and the U.S.

  • Australia: Offers sport scholarships, often including support services and training facilities.

Mexico, Costa Rica: They grant merit-based sports scholarships, but again, with less exposure in tournaments and media.
